Review:

The 1st two tracks on this compilation were recorded in Paris, November 18, 1961 with McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Reggie Workman bass plus Eric Dolphy on alto (only on “Impressions”); they suffer from a subpar sound quality, but atop Jones impulsive drumming and a high tempo walking bass, Trane, Tyner and Dolphy play great on “Impressions”, and the Billy Eckstine pretty cheerful ballad “I Want to Talk About You” that follows, finds everyone playing relaxed and with abandon and is probably the album’s most consistent track!

As for the “Love Supreme” version, recorded with better quality at a Jazz Festival in Antibes, France on July,26 1965, according to Ashley Kahn’s liner notes on the 2005 A Love Supreme [Classics] CD reissue, is the one and only time Coltrane and his classic 4tet of Tyner, Garrison and Jones returned to performed it in its entirety, after the studio session of December 1964 that gave birth that milestone album: it’s a passionate , if sometimes indigestible rendition of JC’s magnum opus ( as there was no way Coltrane musical evolution could go back, and his spiritual route progress is directly proportional to the increment of his Free-tinged iconoclastic performances, a one way only route characterized by those side effects that provoked mixed and conflicting reactions ), which includes a fantastic piano solo, a long drums and sax duet, drums and bass(fingered and bowed) solos and JC often reaching heights of true ferociously visceral playing,(not to consume everyday, really!).
